Important Dates in June


June 1st – World Milk Day

June starts with a good intention. The first day of the month June is celebrated as World Milk Day. It has been named to observe the importance of milk as a global food since 2001 by the UN. By the time many countries around the world was already celebrating the 1st of June as their national milk day. Every year the day has a theme and this year, the theme of the Milk Day will focus on “Sustainability in the dairy sector with messages around the environment, nutrition and socio-economics.

June 2nd – International Sex Workers Day

June 2nd is observed as the International Sex Worker’s Day. In 1975 more than hundred prostitutes gathered to Saint-Nizier church to bring attention to their inhumane working conditions. It lasted 8 days until police removed them on the 10th June. Since 1976 that date is celebrated as International Sex Worker’s Day

June 3rd – World Bicycle Day

June 3rd is celebrated as the World Bicycle Day. In 2018 UN had declared this day to recognise “the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport. The bicycle is a symbol of human progress and it is the only environment friendly transport method in the world.

June 4th – International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

June 4th is declared by the UN as International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression which was established in 1982. The original goal to observe the victims of 1982 Lebanon War and now it is a day to raise awareness of children rights and to acknowledge the acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse.

June 5th – World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated annually since 1974. It is used as a platform to raise awareness on environmental issues. Specially on environmental pollution, Overpopulation, Sustainable Consumption. The day was established by the UN and each year the day has themes and the theme for 2021 is “Ecosystem Restoration“.

June 7th – World Food Safety Day

June 7th is celebrated as the World Food Safety day established by the UN to raise awareness and to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage risks due to food, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. This year’s theme is “Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow“.

June 8th – World Brain Tumor Day/World Oceans Day

June 8th is declared as the World Brain Tumor day by the German Brain Tumor Association in 2000. Currently the day is celebrated all over the globe to help raise awareness of the brain tumor.

Also June 8th is named as World Oceans Day as well. The concept for a ocean day was proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC). But the event was officially recognized by the UN in 2008. The theme for World Ocean Day in 2021 is ”The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods”.

June 12th – World Day Against Child Labour

Since 2002 World Day Against Child Labour is observed by the World Labour Organization. The Significance of the World Day Against Child Labour is to pay attention to the problem of child labour and to find ways to eradicate it. The day is used to spread awareness about the harmful mental and physical problems faced by children forced into child labour, all over the world.

June 14th – World Blood Donor Day

World Blood Donor Day is held on the June 14th every year since 2005. It is organized by WHO and Red Cross to raise awareness of the need of the safe blood and to thank the donors. Each year the day is celebrated with a theme and the theme for 2021 is “Give blood and keep the world beating“.

June 15th – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15th is declared as the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day since officially recognized by the UN in 2011. According to UN “Elder abuse can be defined as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person”. It is a global social issue which affects the Health and Human Rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community.”

June 17th – World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

June 17th is observed as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. The prime goal is to raise awareness of the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought. The date is claimed after drafting the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The theme for 2021 is “Land restoration can contribute greatly to post-COVID19 economic recovery. Investing in land restoration creates jobs and generates economic benefits, and could provide livelihoods at a time when hundreds of millions of jobs are being lost

June 18th – Autistic Pride Day/International Picnic Day

Autistic Pride Day is an annual celebration of autistic people held in June 18th every year. The day is celebrated to help raise awareness of the importance of pride for autistic people and its role in bringing about positive changes in the broader society. The day was first celebrated in 2005 by Aspies For Freedom. The date is selected as it was the birth date of the youngest member of the group at the time. Since 2012 UN had a theme to celebrate the day. This year, the theme is ”Inclusion in the Workplace: Challenges and Opportunities in a Post-Pandemic World”.

June 18th is also celebrated as the International Picnic Day. Picnics are often considered to improve the family life and personal heath as well. On this day people all over the world celebrate by simply going on a picnic with their loved ones.

June 19th – World Sickle Cell Awareness Day/World Sauntering Day

June 19th is observed as the World Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The goal of establishing such a date is to increase the public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers.

June 19th is also declared as the World Sauntering Day. The holiday was created in 1979 by W.T. Rabe in response to the growing popularity of jogging. It is believed to have begun at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, USA. The idea behind the day was to encourage people to slow down and appreciate the world around them. But in some countries the sauntering day is celebrated in August 28th.

June 20th – World Refugee Day/World Father’s Day

World Refugee Day is an international day which is organised every year on the 20th of June by the UN since 2001. The goal of the day is to to celebrate and honour refugees from around the world. The theme for 2021 is “Together we heal, learn and shine“.

World Father’s Day is celebrated in the third sunday of June and in this year 20th, to honor fatherhood and the impact of the role of the father in society. In Europe the father’s day is celebrated in march but the father’s day in US was first celebrated in 1910. Since then many countries have joined to celebrate this day.

June 21st – World Music Day/World Hydrography Day/International Yoga Day

June 21st is celebrated as World Music Day. The first music day was celebrated in France in 1982 and today 120 countries have joined. On this day people are allowed to play their instrument outside and in many countries free concerts are organized and musicians and singers perform without any charge.

World Hydrography Day is also celebrated on the June 21st. It was adopted by the International Hydrography Organization to raise awareness of the importance of the hydrography and the important of the work of the hydrographers.

June 21st is also know as the International Yoga Day. The day was established in 2015 to raise awareness and popularity of Yoga among people.

June 23rd – International Olympic Day/United Nations Public Service Day/International Widow’s Day

June 23rd is celebrated as International Olympic Day since 1948. Since 1987 an Olympic day run was organized in celebration but nowadays the organizing of the Olympic day has gone beyond. Such as concerts and exhibitions.

June 23rd is also famous for the celebration of United Nations Public Service Day. It was established in UN general assembly in 2003. The goal of the day is to “celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community”. June 23rd is the anniversary date of International Labour Organization.

The third importance of the June 23rd is that UN had declared it as the International Widow’s Day. It was initially established by the Loomba Foundation to raise the awareness of the widowhood and its issues. In 2010 UN had recognized it as an important subject and adopted the date during the UN general assembly. The first widow’s day was celebrated in 2005 and it was organized by Lord Loomba, the founding member of Loomba Foundation.

June 26th – International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking/International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

June 26th had declared by the UN as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. It was established in 1987 and its goal is to raise awareness in drug abuse and trafficking and to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

Also June 26th is named as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture by UN. The first observation was held in 1998. UN had selected this particular day for two reasons. In 1945 the United Nations Charter was signed during the midst of World War II on the June 26th. It was the first international instrument obliging UN members to respect and promote human rights. Second, 26 June 1987 was when the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect.

June 30th – World Asteroid Day

June 30th is celebrated as the World Asteroid Day. The UN had claimed this date as Asteroid Day aims to raise awareness about asteroids and what can be done to protect the Earth, its families, communities, and future generations from a catastrophic event. It is the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event, which took place in 1908. It was celebrated since 2015.
